Unlike the infamous cockroach, bed bugs are not attracted to food, at least not those cookie crumbs sitting on your kitchen counter.
Bed bugs like blood (human and animal) making them a possibility in even the nicest of NYC homes so long as there are occupants to feed them.
This erases the notion that only the under privileged, or poor, will be victims of bed bugs. These tiny critters have no preference for how much money their host makes, or how nice the home is. As long as there is a warm blood flow, they are happy little buggers. In fact, if come back to New York from somewhere, and most experts agree that it’s often from hotel rooms in foreign nations.
Unlike the other parasite, ticks, bed bugs do not stay on their human host for extended periods of time. They feed, and then scurry back into hiding, which just may be that suitcase you conveniently left open on the hotel room floor. All comfy inside of your clothes, they get a free ride over the ocean and right to your bedroom, as you start unpacking your clothes. Now hungry, they’ll lie in wait until you climb into bed to try and recover from your jet lag.
Bed bugs can also travel between multi-unit buildings like hotels and apartments.
Where are Bed Bugs Hiding?
A bed bug is typically only in your bed to eat, choosing instead to spend the rest of their time inside outlet plated, behind baseboards or even in the seams of your furniture. That’s why you can bleach your sheets in 150 degree water, and still be a bed bug’s dinner that night.
But How Do Bed Bugs Multiply?
So what if you only brought in one tiny bed bug, and are thinking how much harm is there in that? Well, if it was a female bed bug that was pregnant, get ready for about a hundred babies in the next couple of weeks. These will grow, suck your blood, and then mate, multiplying the population of bed bugs exponentially.
