Take the following steps to prevent or control a New York cockroach infestation this winter.
Cockroaches survive on mainly three things – water, food, and shelter. These household pests remain most active during the night. It is unusual to see a cockroach during the day, unless your home is severely infested. As a homeowner, you can take the following steps to prevent or control a cockroach infestation this winter.
Preventing a Cockroach Infestation
Preserve foods in airtight containers: Some foods can be stored in your refrigerator but other food should be stored at room temperature in airtight containers.
Clean your kitchen utensils regularly: Thoroughly clean cooking utensils and cook tops. Any smell from food remains can attract roaches, so make sure you clean everything properly.
Do not leave food out overnight: It is never a good idea to keep dirty dishes overnight. Wash any dirty dishes, including pet water bowls as soon as possible after they are used.
Wash eating surfaces after having a meal: Wash the surface of your dining table soon after you complete your dinner or lunch. Remains of food left on the table could be an easy source of food for roaches.
Keep empty containers covered or upside down: Prevent cockroaches from contaminating empty containers.
Keep the kitchen clean: Make sure your kitchen does not provide any opportunity for roaches. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and crumbs from hard-to-reach areas of the kitchen.
Vent the garbage bin every day: Any garbage bin with trash piled up is a safe haven for cockroaches. Vent the bin every day or at least keep it tightly covered to prevent any entry of the roaches.
Seal cracks and crevices: The best thing that you can do to prevent cockroaches from entering your home is to seal any cracks and crevices in the walls, floor, electrical wirings, and other places. Fix any leaks in the bathroom pipes and regularly check the basins and sinks for any water leakage. Cockroaches usually get the water they need to survive from leaks in the bathroom or kitchen.
Clean the clutter: Identify all unnecessary materials including paper, clothes, and other materials and remove these from your house. Remove clutter from the basement and attic.
Consider using bath plugs: Once you have sealed all gaps to prevent entry of cockroaches to your home, it is time to make sure they do not find a way into your house through the drains in the bathroom. Use bath plugs to cover up the drains when the bathroom is not in use.
